International seminar on the transcultural citizenship of second generation immigrants.

5 September, 2014

The universities of Deusto, Comillas ICAI-ICADE and Ramon Llull (URL) have organised the “International Seminar on the transcultural citizenship of young, second-generation immigrants”, as part of the Campus of International Excellence (CIE) Aristos Campus Mundus (ACM) project.

The research groups Identitat I Diàleg Intercultural (Universitat Ramon Llull, Barcelona), Padre Arrupe Human Rights Institute (University of Deusto) and the University Institute for Migration Studies (Comillas Pontifical University, Madrid) have organised the international seminar “The construction of transnational and transcultural citizenships:  Integration of children and young people of migrant descent”, which has been held in Barcelona.

This seminar brought together two international experts:  Dr. Martha Montero-Sieburth, professor at Boston University and Amsterdam University; and Dr.  Elzbieta Gozdziak, professor at Georgetown University and director of the Institute for the Study of International Migration.

Participants examined the mechanisms needed to construct the concept of transcultural citizenship (a growing concept within social sciences) by migrant descent, in order to consolidate their feeling of belonging by combining the values of their home society and those of their host society.
